Phoenix Rising Men's Initiative
Reclaiming Identity, Purpose, and Legacy Through Adversity
Developed by Dr. Theresa Lewis, LPC
The Phoenix Rising Men's Initiative is a therapeutic and psychoeducational framework designed to create intentional space for men to explore how adversity, trauma, occupational experiences, loss, relationships, spirituality, and life transitions have shaped their identities.
Rather than focusing solely on what happened, the initiative invites men to examine who they became in response to what happened—and who they are still becoming.
Through reflection, narrative exploration, resilience-building, meaning-making, and spiritually integrated work when desired, participants move through five areas of exploration:
Five Areas of Exploration
Each area builds on the last, moving from understanding through grief and meaning toward reclamation and legacy.
Area 1
The Fire
Understanding adversity's impact on identity. We begin by naming the fires men have walked through—trauma, loss, occupational stress, life transitions—and examining how those experiences reshaped the way they see themselves and the world.
Area 2
The Ashes
Examining what was lost and grieving unlived versions of self. This space honors the grief of who you thought you'd become, the relationships that shifted, and the parts of yourself that went quiet in the process of surviving.
Area 3
The Search
Spiritual identity, faith after hardship, and divine purpose. For those who want it, we explore meaning-making and the spiritual questions that surface when the old structures no longer hold—without pressure toward any single path.
Area 4
The Phoenix
Reconstructing identity beyond roles and expectations. Here, men begin to define themselves on their own terms—not as the job title, the uniform, or the role they were handed, but as the person emerging from the ashes.
Area 5
Rising
Legacy, mentorship, fatherhood, and community leadership. The final movement turns inward insight outward: how the man who has risen can now show up for his family, his community, and the next generation with steadiness and purpose.
Who It's For
Built with specific experiences in mind
The initiative was initially developed with particular attention to the lived experiences of first responders, veterans, firefighters, law enforcement professionals, and Black men—while offering themes that may resonate with men across a variety of backgrounds and life experiences.
First Responders & Veterans
Developed with particular attention to the occupational experiences of those who run toward what others run from.
Black Men
Grounded in Black Psychology and African-centered healing traditions, with attunement to the layered pressures Black men carry.
Men Across Backgrounds
While initially shaped by specific lived experiences, the framework offers themes that resonate with men from many walks of life.
